Communication Design

The worst part about being a designer is having to go day to day and see terrible design all around me. I would estimate that only 1 out of every 20 printed materials I encounter day to day are designed well. That is a terrible fact. There are amateur designers everywhere! With the advent of desktop publishing software, poor design has actually gotten worse. For me, it is heartbreaking.

Design in general is a skill. Good design is not just about making something look “pretty” (a term I hear a lot… “Jessica, can you just make it look pretty?”). Good design is about creating a focal point, selecting colors that reflect the purpose of the material, recognizing space as an element for the eye to rest, using an identity to generate a message.

Most businesses do not realize the importance of the quality of their printed materials and thus settle for something below par. I would feel confident in arguing that simply switching to professionally designed materials would more than double return on those same pieces, whether they be brochures or invitations or business cards.

Quality design is recognizable. It says something. It speaks to your clients and represents your business. It reflects the quality of your product/services. And it is not something you want to do wrong.
